The importance of good hydration for show dogs – Crufts 2018

Crufts 2018 – Who’s excited???

So the day has finally arrived for one of the world’s biggest dogs shows to begin, and I’m sure Crufts 2018 will not disappoint.  I don’t know about you but I’m super excited this year as it’s going to be easier than ever before to watch some of the great events taking place as Channel 4 will cover the event each day and there is also a youtube channel for crufts this year, so no excuses to enjoy all the fun of the show.

For the competitors…

For those of you that have been working hard with your dogs all year, the moment has finally arrived for you to show the world what you are made of. It's such an exciting time for all the breeders and owners. However amongst all the excitement there are lots for you to think about and one of the most important things is the health and well being of your dogs. There will be dogs travelling very long distances to get to Birmingham today and every other day this week. Travel is very hard on any pet. For show dogs in particular this can be a problem as you obviously want them to be in the best condition for the events they are involved in.

Good hydration is crucial and if your dog is perhaps younger travel sickness may be a problem. In this case its important to keep your dog on a liquid diet before and during the journey. Oralade Hydrate + is the perfect choice as it is a specially formulated hypotonic drink designed to quickly replenish fluids, minerals and glucose for optimum hydration.

So the next obstacle to overcome for your dogs is negotiating a very packed noisy environment that's also hot under all the lighting. In this instance again if your dog is panicky and panting a lot it's important to quickly hydrate them and get them to their area/cubicle quickly with possibly their familiar blanket/toys etc. and make them as comfortable as possible.

The last thing to then make note of is the events themselves. If you have dogs that are competing for example in very active events such as agility or flyball again in this hot artificial environment you will need to ensure their hydration needs are met. Oralade Hydrate + is a highly palatable chicken flavoured drink that refuels a dog's energy as it contains 2% carbohydrate.

So there you have it, some of the important things to consider when competing show dogs. We look forward to a great display of canine talent at Crufts this year and we hope all the dogs and their owners have a great time. Best of luck from all at Macahl Animal Health x
